CUDGS was founded in the summer of 2011 by a group of passionate gamers. Our motive is to build a better community for gamers in Cambridge and to promote better understanding and awareness of the gaming and eSports world.
Fast-forward to 2018 and we have now grown into an active society with more than 200 registered members and more than 350 people on our mailing list. We host events both online and offline to bring gamers together and introduce new people to our world.
Our regular events include the CUDGS staple of twice-termly LAN parties, social events such as pub meets and CUDGS formal halls to meet your fellow gamers, and more to help you fill up your schedule.
The CUDGS StarClash has become a regular fixture in our calendar each term – a live eSports event giving students the opportunity to play competitively for a prize pool in front of a live audience of cheering fans and be streamed online to viewers across the internet. This is also a great chance for student casters to commentate the games and show off their analytical insights into the strategy, or just their general banter!
The jewel in the crown of our events is the annual eSports Varsity Challenge between Oxford and Cambridge in Lent term – an all-day pentathlon of League of Legends, StarCraft II, Dota 2, Counter-Strike and Hearthstone; truly the modern-day boat race. In both 2014 and 2015, Cambridge’s clinched the trophy, but in narrowly lost out in 2016 and 2017, making it 2-2, and we will be looking to regain the lead this coming year.
